Title: CIRCULATING BIOMARKERS OF NITROOXIDATIVE STRESS IN YOUNG AND OLDER ACTIVE AND INACTIVE MEN Lori Beth Bjork, M.A., 2010 Directed By: Professor James M. Hagberg, PhD Department of Kinesiology Oxidative stress markers may be novel factors contributing to cardiovascular (CVD) risk. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of long-term exercise, age, and their interaction on the plasma levels of the oxidative stress markers oxidized LDL (ox-LDL), nitrotyrosine, and myeloperoxidase (MPO), and to investigate whether these levels correlated with plasma NOx levels. Older (62 ± 2 yr) active (n=12) men who had exercised regularly for over 30 years and young (25 ± 4 yr) active (n=7) men who had exercised regularly for over 3 years were matched to older (n=11) and young (n=8) inactive males. Young subjects showed lower plasma nitrotyrosine levels than older subjects (P = 0.047). Young inactive subjects had higher ox-LDL levels than either the young active (P = 0.042) or the older active (P = 0.041) subjects. In addition, plasma oxidative stress levels, particularly ox-LDL, were correlated with various conventional CVD risk factors, and in older subjects were associated with Framingham risk score (r = 0.49, P = 0.015). The study found no relationships between plasma markers of oxidative stress and plasma NOx levels. The findings suggest that a sedentary lifestyle may be associated with higher ox-LDL levels and that the levels of oxidative stress markers may contribute to CVD risk. Nitro-oxidative stress biomarkers in active and inactive men.

Oxidative stress markers are novel factors shown to be related to cardiovascular (CVD) risk. We examined the effects of long-term exercise, age, and their interaction on plasma oxidized LDL (ox-LDL), nitrotyrosine, and myeloperoxidase (MPO) levels, all biomarkers of oxidative stress, and determined their association with plasma nitric oxide (NOx) levels as an index of NO bioavailability. Older ...

The effect of eight weeks of interval training on plasma levels of antioxidant enzymes in inactive elderly men

Background and purpose: Aging is a set of progressive changes with gradual decrease in physiological function and homeostasis capacity that increases the risk of disease and mortality. the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of interval training on indices of antioxidants in inactive older men. Methods and Materials: In this quasi-experimental study, 20 inactive elderly men wer...

Peripheral brain-derived neurotrophic factor is related to cardiovascular risk factors in active and inactive elderly men

Regular exercise plays an important preventive and therapeutic role in heart and vascular diseases, and beneficially affects brain function. In blood, the effects of exercise appear to be very complex and could include protection of vascular endothelial cells via neurotrophic factors and decreased oxidative stress. The purpose of this study was to identify the age-related changes in peripheral ...

Association between the circulating leptin levels and the biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation among Iranian overweight and obese adults

Background: Oxidative stress in obese people is an important pathogenic mechanism of an obesity-associated metabolic syndrome. We evaluated the association between circulating leptin levels with biomarkers of oxidative stress in overweight and obese participants.    Methods: This study was performed on 189 overweight and obese people aged 18-60 years old. Serum leptin, superoxide dis...

Determination of NRF2 and GSTM1 Expression and Biomarkers of Oxidative Stress on Smoking and Nonsmoking Sperm: A Pilot study

Background and Aims: Smoking has an influence on different semen parameters. It is regarded as a risk factor for infertility. This study aims to evaluate the effect of smoking cigarettes on the expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) and glutathione S-transferase Mu 1 (GSTM1) genes and biomarkers of oxidative stress in sperm. Materials and Methods: A case-control study...
